I feel like making this now.
In three more sleeps, I will be moving my things into my residence and be starting my stay at the University of Western Ontario. Starting Move-In Day, I will be posting, once a day, my daily experiences on the campus.

Memoirs of a Mustang Empty SAAAAAUUUUUUGEEEEEEEEEEN.

Entry 000-1: Orientation Week, Day 1
Got to my residence around 2:00. As my car approached the building, a sophomore helper told me to come out. Two other guys asked me which faculty I'm in. When I said "engineering",
    They wrote:EEEEEEEEEEEEEENJ FROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!!!
They meant no harm, it just seems to be something special for engineering students.

I got my meal plan/room key/laundry key, and went up to my room...on the seventh floor (keep in mind each floor is three floors separated by small flights of stairs. My roommate is an undeclared engineering student named Abdelrahman (goes by Abdel). Comes from Cairo, Egypt. Good guy. Really...gentle. Not in your face about anything.

Had a meeting on my floor, had dinner with my floor, then all of Saugeen-Maitland's freshmen got together to practice our cheers for the opening ceremony. It was kinda bad; the sophomore leaders weren't loud enough.

Anyway, we had opening ceremony, Apparently there was 6500 people there. Each faculty and residence got to cheer, and that went on for about 2.5 hours. Then a hypnotist was on stage, Mike Mandel. He was awesome.

    Pretty good start.

It was an alright start. Kinda too much happening, didn't get much of a break. Then again, I didn't have to go. Whatever.

Memoirs of a Mustang Empty Better.

Post by Cephalo the Pod Tue 04 Sep 2012, 10:45 pm

Entry 000-2: Orientation Week, Day 2
7:00-Woke up. I went down with my floor for breakfast (in my pajamas, with no shower), except I got there before everyone and couldn't find them when I got my food. Neutral. Food, by the way, was free: three pancakes (which tasted muffiny), a fruit (I got a green apple) and a juice box (I got orange). Very Happy. There were instructions to meet up outside, no specifications on what's going on. Again, in my pajamas.

8:40-Saugeen-Maitland left the residence for a pep rally. Gee, thanks for telling me that beforehand so that I could have a shower. I was one of a handful of people not wearing the green shirt.

9:00-Our crowd was in a standstill for half an hour, waiting for our chance to enter the...auditorium? Let's call it that. Okay, at least it didn't rain. The clouds look like they could let loose at any moment.

10:00-A two-hour pep rally. PAJAMAS! CROWD OF GREEN SHIRTS! At least the rally was fun. The first half hour was forgettable (I think it was just hype videos and generic advertising). Then this guy, Doctor Mike, does a 45-minute-or-so show on dating/intimacy. Good time. Then after Mike was done...there was a video on fire. This video.

...What the watch did I just fuck?

12:30ish-We went back to our residences. It was raining. At this point, I've given up on having a shower. I changed and went down to have lunch holy shit this line is huge! I got a chicken vajita with a side of fries. Oh, wait, I got rice piled with vajita ingredients, with a side of fries. Didn't know I had to specify what kind of grain product I wanted my food to be touching (to be fair, the menu does say that it can be either tortilla or rice).

2:30-The day got better. My floor had a meeting, about half left after, the rest (and I) stayed for chatting and a tour. Good thing I stayed; I learned a lot of people's names, and actually did stuff with them.

4:30-Chatted with my mom about things. Then went down with some floormates for dinner. Some great-tasting spaghetti, meatballs and garlic bread. Real cheap, too!

Rest of the night-Chatted with floormates, and my sister Christy. Abdel was gone for most of the day due to health appointments (he's into sports and has been in pain recently [they said it was a pulled muscle in his chest]). When I next found him, he was napping in our room. Hence my chatting. Everyone got real excited over my memorization of the periodic table. People began getting hyped for the residential dance tonight. Sounds like it's going to be insane (I'm not going). For some context, last year's dance ended with 13 condoms on the floor. MMMMMMMMMM.

Today ended up being pretty awesome. Tomorrow at 7 is the start of the faculty day.

Memoirs of a Mustang Empty Faculty

Post by Cephalo the Pod Wed 05 Sep 2012, 10:39 pm

Entry 000-3: Orientation Week, Day 3
    Faculty day.

7:00-Had a shower, breakfast (nice and cheap; 4 sausage patties and two hash browns for $2.64 YEAH), all ready to go tour the shit out of some engineering.

9:00-Very workshopish kind of morning. Went to different stations, each with different activities. Nothing spectacular, but each was short. We were split into teams whose names had an Avengers motif (get it? AvENGers? BYUHAHAHA!!!). Mine was Tesseract.

1:45-Lunch was a chicken BLT pasta bake.

3:15-We all gathered together again for a massive game of capture the flag. It was awesome. There were four teams (Iron Man [me], Captain America, Thor, Hulk) and hundreds of people. After the game I got a bit lost before heading back to residence.

5:00-Dinner was sauteed haddock (my budget couldn't afford anyone else). It was alright.

7:00-One Love, a pep rally. I went just to check it out, and stayed because Steve Page might be there. He's a Barenaked Lady. Time went by, and I never saw him. I left at 9:45. During that time, there was a homosexual American lieutenant, a music group, a poet, and a pianist. The first and third I enjoyed.

What's past is prologue; tomorrow is first day of classes.
    PS: Abdel's on the forum.

Woah, your post about you not showering and being in the pep rally. Exact same thing happened to me yesterday. Only it was clothes from the day before I was wearing, and I hadn't had breakfast yet lol.

Entry 001: First day of classes
    This was all yesterday.

7:00-Woke up and got ready for classes. Breakfast was french toast. IT was soft, and covered in egg. Okay, I guess.

8:30-Two hour-long lectures: physics and engineering statics. Except it was mostly just introductions to the classes.

10:30-Due to being the first week, this two-hour engineering lab didn't happen. I had lunch; crispy chicken and vegetables.

Noonish-Wild goose chase to figure out a problem with my payments (it's a long story). So I went to the student services building, but they said I should go to Elgin Hall. Which is a good 1km hike from where I was. Yay. Then the Elgin people said they couldn't find a problem on their end. Which is good, in a way, I guess. Exhausted, I went home to chill.

3:30-Chemistry lecture oh wait just another intro.

5:00ish-Dinner. Lasagna. Pretty good. After that, I hung out with some people on my floor. I really entertain them, it seems.

9:00-Carnival! Except it's not open to freshmen until 9:30.

9:30-Carnival! Except it's super crowded and I have to wake up at 7:15 the next day. I did one thing; a bouncy-castle obstacle course race (it's a awesome as it sounds).

Still need to get textbooks. Where the hell's my OSAP?

Memoirs of a Mustang Empty Second verse, same as the first.

Post by Cephalo the Pod Sat 08 Sep 2012, 12:44 am

    Entry 002: Trudging through
7:00-You know the drill. Three breakfast sausages and hash browns for breakfast, with a big bottle of orange juice.

8:30-Two hour-long lectures of applied math. The first was AM1411A, linear algebra for engineering. I actually enjoyed it; the professor's hard to understand, but there was an actual lesson. The second was AM1413 (had a hell of a time finding its building), calculus for engineers. Boring intro, but thankfully he cut the class short.

10:30-Chilling at home, having a lunch of AWESOME chicken wings and stirfry.

1:30-ES1050, a course pretty much just about being a better engineer (it seems). Another cut-down class. By the way, usually on Fridays I have three hours before and three hours after this class for chemistry labs/tutorials, but, you know, first week.

2:30-Just chilling at home oh wait the engineering freshmen have to meet up at 4:00 to prepare for the closing ceremonies at 6:00. And no time for dinner. I just love O-week!

6:00-Closing ceremonies. Just crowds of freshmen cheering, nothing special (although my faculty did have a real good Iron Man suit for our cheer).

9:30-The highlight of the day, talent show for engineering freshmen. I did my periodic-table shtick, the crowd loved it.

Tomorrow is Shinerama, a charity thinger, at 10:00. Until 2:00. Which is when the big football game starts. MMMMMMMM-.

Memoirs of a Mustang Empty No warm food for breakfast.

Post by Cephalo the Pod Sun 09 Sep 2012, 1:21 am

    Entry 003: Shinerama
8:30-Breakfast is a fruity muffin, a 450mL bottle of orange juice, and an apple.

9:30-The engineering freshmen leave for Shinerama, except right now we're waiting about an hour for some reason.

10:30-Bus ride to...wherever the hell Shinerama is. For us, apparently, a plaza on Oxford Street. My dad, who was visiting Caley today, drove by to see my for a second.

11:00-Shinerama, a fundraiser for research into treating cystic fibrosis, has two components: going door-to-door, asking for donations; and standing around a mall doing the same thing. We Enj Frosh did the latter. It was alright, I guess. Got a free noisemaker out of it. I breathe in, and a noise is made. We were there until 2:00, so one of the stores kindly brought us pizza. We each got one slice.

2:00-Everyone walked back to campus. There was a football game at 1:00, but I wanted more lunch. I got a BLT, chocolate milk and chocolate glaze donut from Tim Hortons.

    3:00-Chilling at home.

5:00-Tried buying textbooks, but the store just closed. Gghh.

6:00-Dinner, a black bean burger (pretty good), fries, chocolate milk and an apple.

7:00-Chilling at home. Talked with my parents. By the way I have Skype now.

9:40ish-Did laundry for the first time. I think it went pretty well.

Tomorrow I see my dad. For an actual visit, I mean.

Memoirs of a Mustang Empty WHO'S READY FOR SOME MOTHAFUCKIN ENGINEERING?!!

Post by Cephalo the Pod Sun 09 Sep 2012, 10:46 pm

    Entry 004: Dad visits
9:30-Breakfast is four sausages and a triangular hash brown. I'm having trouble finding the right quantity to eat for breakfast. All my life, I would just have a bagel, or two pieces of toast, or a bowl of cereal, or an english muffin. But that's all gone (although there's some tasty muffins there). Ehh, I'm sure I'll figure something out.

10:00ish-It's nice to have a day free of O-week activities HEY TYLER COME DOWN TO SPENCER ENGINEERING WE HAVE A SURPRISE FOR YOU. FOR FUCK'S SAKE I HAVEN'T EVEN SHOWERED. To be faired, I had neglected to resend my cell number to my engineering soph, otherwise she would have warned me in advance.

10:40-Put quite bluntly, engineering initiation. Apparently the freshmen went in small groups, going through one group at a time. It started in room 1059 of the Spencer Engineering Building. The Avengers was playing. Then, as soon as we sat down, the sophs told us they were sick of us and wanted us to get the fuck out (another way, not the way we came). Yeah, this is engineering initiation.
I've gotta admit, the sophs put quite a lot of effort into this. They constructed an entire corridor out of plastic and lined up lights all along the path. The elevator had a sign that said "Stark Tower". "Pepper Potts" asked us to take out our phones. The Incredible Hulk ran by. Nick Fury made us crawl through a dark maze. Lots of profanity was involved.
There was more games and a chance to buy a kit that would get us into an engineering party tonight, but I wanted to go back and have lunch and get ready to see my dad. Plus I doubted I would spend $40 dollars just to go to a party (in the end, I didn't buy it).

12:45-Lunch, chicken fingers and mixed vegetables (corn, peas, etc). It was good.

2:10-My dad came over (with Caley). I showed them my room and the University Community Centre.

3:40-Bought my physics textbook. Will buy more once I make sure what I can get used.

    4:20-Chillin'.

5:00-Dinner, chicken and corn. Big Reeses from the vending machine for dessert. Sweet.

And the rest of the night was pretty uneventful. The floor's rather quiet (maybe they're all somewhere, I dunno), Abdel's still in Toronto seeing his sister who just arrived from Cairo, and I seem to be getting a cold. Splendid.
