So after alot of hard listening, I've narrowed it down to two songs.
These are definitively and without question Weezer's two best songs:
Say It Ain't SoAcross The SeaSay It Ain't So: Okay so this is the one of the classics, everybody knows this one. And that's because it has a pleasing melody and is super digestible. But beyond initial appeal (which this song has a lot of), there is plenty to really love and appreciate about this song. First off, it's one of the only songs on the Blue Album which is just heart wrenchingly emotional. On top of that, I really like the guitar in this song. Rivers' vocals are the focal point of most of Weezer's music, and for this song it's no exception. However, I think that the guitar in this song comes very close to being the star. Now I don't think the guitar is impressive in it's technicality or anything, but just the way the guitar dictates the phase and mood of each section of the song is incredible. This song shifts from slow and somber to desperate and emotional and loud frequently, and these emotional changes are clearly articulated in the guitars progression long before any lyrics tip off the tone. The lyrics and vocals are still the stars of this song, as Rivers belts out absolutely impassioned cries and bars that make me personally think "who even thinks of that way to say that thing". Anyways, if you really give this song a listen, make sure to pay attention to the guitar and the moods that are being conveyed.
Favourite Moment:
The buildup to the second chorusAcross the Sea: This one is a little less mainstream as it is from Pinkerton, an album that is often regarded as Weezer's best, but also an album that is less digestible and friendly to the first listen. This song details Rivers' struggles with never being able to meet a fan from Japan whom he got a letter from. Rivers falls in love with as a result of his isolation and depression at Harvard. This song is desperately emotional and longing (See the line "Why are you so far away from me? I need your help and your way across the sea"), and at the same time is full of energy. Instrumentally, I think that percussion is really worth listening to. I don't know what to say about this song, other than, as Rob says, it's an emotional trainwreck, just like the rest of the album.
Favourite Moment: "
As if I could live on words and dreams and a million screams Oh how I need a hand in mine, to feel"
