Anyways, Casey Affleck gives a brilliant, repressed, and ultimately haunting performance, definitely gonna win the Oscar for best actor this year. Michelle Williams is a supporting actress who doesn't have much screen time at all, but nails every minute she's in. The rest of the supporting cast is also really strong, making this is one of the best, if not the best, acted movies I have ever seen. 8.8/10.

Okay, so i need to make a swift adjustment to dota, i now give it a 7.5. The game is far from perfect. The new update reduced the HUD too much, now it strains my eyes to see mana values on the screen and items at all. Additionally, the map is completely nonsensical now, a wholly and utterly uninspired hodgepodge of runes (which there are now 6 of), camps of varying size, etc. Not to mention neutral creeps only spawn at the 1, 3, 5, 7,... minute marks now. Also the addition of skill trees is absurdly imbalanced. Also rosh is moved. The reign of dota is over.
But on the other hand, the teamplay and mechanics are still deep and nuanced, and it is a fun game despite these major setbacks.

Also, LIL POOPIE BOY COMIN AT YOu WITH ANOTHER RATING
Animal Farm - George Orwell
This book is a typical book of ideas rather than a story by itself. The book focuses on an animal farm that is essentially left to anarchy, and as such, when a societal organizational form is achieved, different animals that have different qualities, such as intelligence or strength, are established at differ social classes.
all in all it is a short and concise read, well written, and enjoyable to read.

- slightly spoilerish:
- This is a critique of communism I believe is what I read, and what happens as a result. The famous quote that sums up the book essentially is "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

I would never anticipate that communism would rise from anarchy. That seems impossible.
Actually.... maybe..

i mean theres not REALLY a part of the book that is anarchy, but in terms of description, there is no order, then communism is adopted as a form of order

Hey Rob, can you update the OP with my rating of "Best" for Worm?
Or do I actually need to give a number? I guess you could put a 10?

Affirmative
I read some btw, just a small sample. Writing style put me at ease, and was pretty relateable. I can see why you like it.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987)
This record marks an interesting transition period for RHCP, as well as for American rock in general. The transition I speak of is one from the popish basslines and flamboyant lead solo's of the 80s - to the roaring riffs and spastic drums of 90s post punk and grunge.
The first third of the album is rather enjoyable. The road is paved with high energy, varied instrumentals backed by goonish rat-pack vocals, but somewhere along the line the energy runs a little stale. Probably somewhere in the middle of the 4th track.
The vocals are an obvious prepubescent prelude to the style that came to define RHCP in the 90s. The layers seem to stew together, with brief moments of cohesion flaring out of the hot mess on occasion.
A particularly regrettable moment for me was track 7, a cover of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues". This cut doesn't seem to leverage any of the original strengths of Bob Dylan's classic, or alleviate any of it's shortcomings.
The album is actually so underwhelming that I have trouble catching anything to write about. It's not terribly awful, save a few moments, but it's never considerably enjoyable.
Final thoughts: uninspired, undirected, potentially misunderstood?

Re: King of All Ratings Thread
Darn. I was going to come here and review Animal Farm, because I thought you had reviewed 1984.
We simply CANNOT have two reviews for the same thing. That is just too scary for me to comprehend.
So I guess I'll do Fountain Head.
FOUNTAIN HEAD - AYN RAND
I've said for quite a while that I find the terms 'non-fiction' and 'fiction' rather disingenuous. I find that these words attempt to establish a dichotomy in literature where there needn't be one.
Generally, one reads non-fiction in the pursuit of knowledge or ability. It might seem antithetic that one would read fiction in the pursuit of a novel emotional experience -- however these pursuits are two sides of the same coin; appearing opposite from abstraction, though truly deeply connected.
The Fountain Head was the final swing of the mallet - hitting the nail directly on the head and firmly cementing this idea in my mind.
Fountain Head is an 'idea novel', similar to the works of Orwell of Huxley. The difference being that Rand doesn't serve it to you. Her criticisms and ideas do not stand up and demand their attention, the dystopia she's conceived is subtle. Subtle enough to go unnoticed.
Rand's ideas are provocative, painfully honest, and dangerously taboo. They are delicately woven into an immersive landscape of characters and settings. Each personality, and each structure meticulously crafted by the minds and hands of those personalities, reflects some frequency of the novels underlying motif. Then, through a series of page turning episodes, they finally converge to a crystal clear beam of light.
The book is long. There's no denying that. But it's also magnificent.
It was more than likely the right novel at the right time for me, but if anyone is at any point holding a life perspective similar to mine, I would recommend it.

Can't Buy a Thrill - Steely Dan (1972)
Can't Buy a Thrill, released in 1972, was the debut album of the New York jazz-rock ensemble Steely Dan.
The words I might choose to most accurately depict this piece would be; soothing, reassuring, mesmerizing. The album quickly became known for its Latin inspired mamba beats and its bluesy board-walk riffs. Furthermore, the instrumental diversity on this album is astounding, especially for a 70's album on the popish side of the spectrum.
Steel guitars cry out as they're edged on by a slew of blue collar bass waves and simple yet sophisticated keyboard progressions. I feel like some of these solos were cut from a psychedelic jazz score. I've been grooving to the simple rhythms of certain tracks when out of nowhere I find myself bursting into laughter at the astonishing solos.
The album plays closely to one theme: honesty. It's captured in the earnest character that each instrument and band member brings. Atop the instrumentals the humbled verses paint vivid portraits of societal landscapes, distilling the rough and rugged form of New York life down to wizened expressions of self. Every track feels so painfully personal, even when the band draws allegories off 12th century English kings.
My only criticism of the album is that it seems, at times, to lack direction. The ending track seems very oddly placed, and every time I give this album a listen I end without a sense of conclusion. I think a simple sonnet would have closed the album off wonderfully.

Re: King of All Ratings Thread
i agree with you big time on the final track. Sometimes though that is the price of variety, and and diversity on an album. You cant always expect a winner, but i found the song to be fine just placed in the wrong spot. I would have ended the album with change of the guard instead, its tone of phases come and go its just the way the world works i felt to be fitting for the end of that album.

Hey what's up guys, lil poopie boy comin at you with another review!
Today I am reviewing the Staedtler norica 132 46 HB 2 pencil. It's a good pencil with excellent writing fluidity, stiff flex for those who like to write hard, and an effective however short-life eraser. The graphite comes onto the page with a smooth head to it, and you can get this pencil as sharp as a Sharp 4K LED flatscreen tv displaying Gordon Ramsay sharpening a beautiful Bob Kramer Euroline SS Damascus Collection chefs knife ($719.99, Amazon.com). If you're a guy who uses pencils and likes to write stuff on paper with them, this is the pencil for you!
8.9/10, only drawback is the non-durable eraser!
