Lol this guy. Dota is a good game tho. I mean, It's a BAD game....but it's a good bad game. Ya know what I mean??
Like, Dota is on the same level as 7 GRAND DAD. A game so confusing and bad and bootleg, that it's good.
Dota is very similar.

Re: Through Shady Lanes
So i play dota regularly still. I have fun, definitely a game you need to understand and have a specific attitude towards to enjoy. I don't think you guys have the right attitudes (by choice or not, i do not know) to enjoy the game for what it is. Its complicated but I was telling Rob a bit ago that alot of my satisfaction with the game comes from trying my best and playing on point because it really doesnt take much, you just have to actually focus. I feel like dota passes itself off as a slow game or one you dont have to try for or can just play on autopilot, but i really think if you actively engage yourself in the game, work on micro and macro game management and use all the tools available to you (wards, team comp, mini map awareness) to the best of your ability, it is alot of fun. It reminds me of other sports in that way. In st pauls soccer, we were the worst team in the league for like 2 years, but i still looked forward to every game knowing we were gunna likely lose, because i knew i would go out there and show everybody my best and that was enjoyable to me. I competed hard and that was awesome. Thats why I like this stuff.
I know some people on this forum will criticize that as meathead hockey loving sports guy stuff (ahem, duncan rory). But let me tell you guys something. You are wrong. I always here the excuse about how you don't wanna get competitive in a game or something. I think you're wrong. And I think you are missing a valuable opportunity in life to experience healthy competition in a low risk environment. So just know you are wrong. WRONG.

Re: Through Shady Lanes
Awesome post. I've always felt like it's crucial to have a competitive outlet but I've never been sure why.
It's weird because I've always been able to enjoy any sport or game, no matter how shitty, as long as one of two things holds: I'm enjoying that sport/game/hobby with people I like to spend time with, or that sport/game/hobby has a competitive aspect with avenues for personal expression. This makes me wonder where my distaste for dota comes from.
My first guess is that I successfully tricked myself into disliking dota because I knew there were other things more crucial to my personal success to work on. I don't think that's such a bad thing as long as I can undo it later on.
My second guess, however, would be that I've subconsciously accumulated my distaste for the game through associated anxiety, stress, or perhaps anger. Which would make your post at the top of this page perfectly accurate LOL. This case isn't so good.
Realistically, I strongly believe it's a combination of the two.

Re: Through Shady Lanes
I agree man. Dota understandably is a time commitment. As is any past time, but just the nature of dota locks you in for a block of like 50 mins usually. Which is definitely unfortunate unless you are okay spending your time doing that. Which is why I think its good if you don't play it all the time but only as a gentle pleasure and occasional treat! Also the anxiety thing is real, for a long time i started thinking different about the game because you typically lose around 50% of games right?

Re: Through Shady Lanes
Dota is a fun game! Like, I've spent 700+ hours playing so It's not like I don't enjoy it. But a problem I've had with the game since I first started playing it is that each match is so long. I know it's just a game, but when I spend 50 mins in one match to only lose, I feel a little disappointed (kind of situational anyways).
It's not a thing of me not liking competitive games either. I love competitive games! It's just that Dota is a huge time sink. Competitive games like Smash Bros, a match can last 3 mins then you can jump back into one immediately. You also don't feel exhausted after playing it because each match is quick every time. So if you lost a bunch of Smash matches, you wouldn't care overall.
Whereas Dota, each match is so long that it can last up to 50 mins and you might not even feel like you learned anything after. Dota IMO is a game where you don't fully learn the game just from experience. You have to practically look up strategies and ways to play to the game to become a better player. So for me, that's why I'm not as into Dota as you guys. I like it, but not enough to the point where I actually want to strive to become a better player. I don't have an interest to keep learning the meta and to follow each update and watch character changes. There are other games I like more and would rather get super into if you guys were down. Also, RTS games are fun but it's not the game genre I want to be super competitive about.
I don't know If what I said makes sense or was all over the place, but...ya. I guess that's just how I feel. Again, I actually like Dota, but that's the main reason why I don't play it as much as you boyz. I hope you guys can understand my feelings
BUT IN THE END ITS JUST A FUCKIN GAME RIGHT? JEEZ WE NEED TO STOP TAKING THESE THINGS SO SERIOUSLY

Re: Through Shady Lanes
Hahah dunc we're not having a blood thirsty argument or anything, I think what brandon and I were saying was pretty constructive and interesting. This of course is directed at your last sentence, even tho im pretty sure you were mostly joking lol
i think one of the points brandon and i were trying to get across (or at least, this could be taken from what we said) is that its not necessary or helpful to get disappointed or demotivated after losing a long game. If we change our mindset we can curb those negative emotional tendencies.
also, if dotas not the type of game you wanna grind then grind melee with brandon and i

Off on a bender!
I'm sure I could hypothetically love this game. There's a lot of media I enjoy now that started off as just stuff I'd sorta..."hover" around. Seeing an example of one of its tropes on TVTropes, finding fanart on Tumblr, etc.
All it'll take for me to totally get invested is one solid day of wiki-bingeing.
